If the sky stays cloudy

Nobody can promise the aurora, so the real difference between cruises is what you get on a cloudy night: a free second cruise, a discounted retry, dinner and a hot tub anyway, or simply a night on the fjord.

The polar night

Dark by afternoon, green by night.

Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, the ring of sky where the northern lights are most frequent. From late November to mid-January the sun does not rise at all, and a deep blue light fills the short afternoons.

The aurora itself shines far above the clouds, so what you need is a gap in them and a dark horizon. That is why the boats leave the harbour lights behind and the captain picks the direction on the night, by the forecast.

Which cruise, when to go, what to wear and whether to take the boat or the bus: one tab each.

  • Autumn: September and October bring strong aurora activity and no snow on the roads yet.
  • Polar night: from late November to mid-January the sun stays down, and the nights are longest.
  • Late winter: March is another high point for the lights, with longer days for the fjords.

  • More: the full list in what to wear on deck.
  • By boat: calm, warm and away from the town lights, but tied to the sea.
  • By bus: the minibus chase can drive inland when clouds sit on the coast.
  • By train: the Narvik train climbs to a mountain station with no road.

Everything else worth knowing

When to go, what guests wish they had known, what to do by day and the fine print.

  • Early in your stay: book the cruise for your first clear night, so a retry still fits.
  • A clear forecast: check the cloud cover on the day; the aurora shines above the clouds.
  • Moonless nights: a full moon washes out faint lights, guests say.
  • Autumn or March: the busiest aurora months, with milder weather than midwinter.
  • Turn your phone to its night mode and hold it still against the railing.
  • Stay out on deck: the faint lights look grey to the eye and green on camera.
  • Eat before you go; most boats sell snacks rather than serve dinner.
  • Keep your booking details handy: operators may move a cloudy night.
  • Every trip on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before.
  • Operators can move or cancel a night in storms or when the forecast is hopeless.
  • Coastal winters often sit around plus 5 to minus 5 C, colder with the wind.
  • Prices are from-prices in USD and move with the date; the checkout price is the one that counts.

We had a lovely time! The guides were very knowledgeable and the first night we went, it was cloudy and rainy (bad luck) but the guides tried to make the most of it anyway. We went back for our second chance the following night and got extremely lucky with an amazing showing of the northern lights!

It was indescribably beautiful! The highlight of our trip. We didn't expect to see so many whales. Lots of orcas, a few humpback whales and two fin whales.

An incredible experience, beautiful scenery. It's absolutely worth it. I canceled the bus tour to go by boat, and I don't regret it at all! I highly recommend it.

The guide

The northern lights from a boat, explained

A dark sky, a gap in the clouds and a warm place to wait: that is what a cruise gives you.

Why see the aurora from the water

Tromsø is a lit-up town on an island, and its glow washes out the faint lights. Half an hour on the boat and the harbour falls behind, the mountains turn black against the sky, and the fjord doubles every green ribbon. You wait in a heated lounge with a hot drink and step outside when the guide calls, which is a far gentler night than standing in a snowy field.

Guests say the same thing: even on a cloudy night the cruise was a good evening, and on a clear one it was the highlight of the trip.

Away from the town lights.

Which cruise

For a first aurora cruise, the second-chance cruise is our pick: a quiet catamaran, a warm lounge and a free second trip if the sky stays shut. The evening aurora cruise gives you more hours on deck, and the yacht cruise turns the night into a dinner with a hot tub under the sky.

Good to know: book your cruise for an early night of your stay. If the first night is cloudy, a second-chance or discounted retry still has nights left to use.

Boat, bus or coastal voyage

A minibus chase can drive for hours to find clear skies, which helps when clouds cover the coast. The big coastal voyages of Hurtigruten and Havila sail for days along the coast, with many nights at sea; an evening cruise is the shortest and simplest way to be out on the water under the aurora.

What to wear and bring

Layers: wool next to the skin, a warm jacket, a hat, mittens and insulated boots. The wind on deck makes it feel much colder than the air, Visit Norway warns. Bring a charged phone, a spare battery in an inside pocket, and some patience.

FAQ

Questions before you sail

Straight answers to what people ask most about the northern lights in Norway and the cruises.

Which month is best for northern lights in Norway?

The season runs from late August to late March. Visit Norway says September and October and March and April have the most aurora activity, and November to February works too, with the longest dark hours. See the best time for the northern lights.

Will the northern lights be visible in Norway in 2026?

Yes, on clear dark nights. The sun's 11-year cycle peaked in October 2024, and Visit Norway calls this one of the most active periods of the cycle. The lights still need a clear sky, so no single night is certain.

Does Norway have northern lights every night?

Not visibly. The aurora needs a dark, clear sky and enough solar activity, and clouds hide it often on the coast. Peak time is often between 11 PM and 2 AM, says Visit Norway. A cruise sails to wherever the sky looks clearest.

Is a northern lights cruise better than a bus tour?

They suit different nights. A boat takes you away from the town lights with a warm lounge and the fjords around you; a minibus can drive far inland when clouds sit on the coast. See boat or bus.

What happens if you see no northern lights on a cruise?

It depends on the cruise. The second-chance cruise takes you out again free, the evening aurora cruise offers a discounted second tour, and most others offer no retry. Each card here says which.

How much is a northern lights cruise in Tromsø?

The Tromsø cruises on this site start at $127 to $139 for 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. The yacht cruise with dinner and a hot tub is $345, and the Lofoten cruise from Svolvær starts at $103.

Which city in Norway is best for the northern lights?

Tromsø has the most cruises and tours. Alta, where the world's first permanent northern lights observatory was built in the late 1800s, is a good base inland, and Lofoten adds sharp peaks. See Tromsø, Alta or Lofoten.

Where am I guaranteed to see the northern lights?

Nowhere: the aurora is a natural light, like the weather. Hurtigruten promises a free 6- or 7-day voyage if no lights are officially sighted on its voyages of 11 days or more between 20 September and 31 March. See the coastal voyages.

What should you wear on a northern lights cruise?

Warm layers, wool next to the skin, a hat, mittens and warm boots. On deck the wind makes it feel much colder than the thermometer says. See what to wear.

Is Norway or Iceland better for the northern lights?

Both sit under the auroral zone. Northern Norway adds the fjords, a choice of evening cruises from Tromsø and coastal winters that Visit Norway puts at around plus 5 to minus 5 C.

What is the rarest aurora colour?

Red and blue. Green, from oxygen, is by far the most common; red glows at the highest altitudes, and blue and purple edges show up at the highest levels of solar activity.

How much is the northern lights train in Norway?

The Narvik northern lights train starts at $168 for 3 hours on the Ofoten Railway to Katterat, a mountain station 373 metres up with no road, with a campfire and hot drinks.
